Fact Check: 2016 Video of PM Modi Giving Free Gas Connection Is Viral with False Narrative

Date:

A video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is doing the rounds on social media, claiming that a woman beneficiary of the government’s flagship Ujjwala Yojana returned the LPG cylinder to the PM on the stage.

The text on the video in Hindi reads: “पकड़ो अपना सीलेंडर और हमे करो आज़ाद……..माफ करो मोडानी जी” (Translation: “Hold your cylinder and set us free…….. Sorry Modani ji”)

The above post can be seen here (Archive).

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above video, and found it to be manipulated.

Putting the keyframes of the video through the Reverse Image Search, we traced a news bulletin on the official YouTube channel of NDTV featuring the video in question showing the same woman accepting the free gas connection from PM Modi.

According to the NDTV report, dated May 01, 2016, the viral video was from Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh, where PM Modi launched the Ujjwala Yojana scheme.

We also found the full version of the entire event on the official YouTube channel of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) streamed LIVE on May 01, 2016.

At the 26:23 minute time counter, the same woman can be seen receiving the free gas connection from the PM.

Therefore, it is clear that the woman in the video is accepting the gas connection, NOT returning. In fact, the viral video is doctored.
