Fact Check: 2017 Clip of Ammunition Warehouse Blast in Ukraine Viral with Misleading Claims

Date:

Finland joined NATO on April 4, 2023, to safeguard its citizens and for the overall safety of the nation. This comes as a massive blow to Russia which is already wary of NATO reaching its borders.

Against this backdrop, a viral video claiming to show a Russian strike on an ammunition warehouse in Kherson, Ukraine, is doing the rounds on social media.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: Strike on the warehouse of ammunition of #Ukrainian troops in #Kherson.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we traced a news report, titled: На складе боеприпасов в Харькове продолжаются взрывы (English: Explosions continue at an ammunition depot in Kharkiv), published on the Russian media outlet TV Centre, dated March 25, 2017.

One of the pictures in the report matches exactly with one of the keyframes of the viral video and according to the report, the blast happened in Kharkiv, Ukraine, when a fire broke out in the ammunition depot.

Searching further, we came across a quote tweet by Kyle Glen  an investigator at the Center for Information Resilience, debunking the viral video posted by another user.

As per the tweet, the explosion occurred in Balakliya, Kharkiv, in 2017, and the news clippings posted by him, too, corroborate the claim.

Another report by BBC News, dated March 23, 2017, confirms that an explosion occurred in an ammunition warehouse in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video, claiming Russia bombed an ammunition warehouse in Kherson, Ukraine, is misleading.
