Fact Check: 2019 Video Of Man Inside Lion’s Enclosure In Delhi Zoo Viral With Misleading Claim

A video of a man sitting in front of a lion is doing the rounds on social media claiming that he recently fell inside the lion enclosure at the Delhi Zoo and was killed by the lion.

The video was shared with a caption: दिल्ली के चिड़ियाघर में शेर के पिंजरे मे गिरा एक आदमी शेर ने ली जान  (English version, below.)

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a keyword search, we found multiple media reports from 2019 where the incident was covered. Hindustan Times shared the same video in October 2019 with the headline:
Watch: Man enters lion’s enclosure in Delhi zoo, rescued safely.

The video description reads that the man was rescued without any injuries by the authorities. Police also said that the man gained entry into the enclosure by scaling the iron grill that serves as a fence around the enclosure.

The same video was shared by NDTV and ANI in 2019.

Several reports mentioned that the man was mentally-unstable. However, as per the reports he escaped unhurt as the alert zoo staff quickly tranquilised the lion and rescued him. The media reports can be seen here and here.

Thus, from the above information, it is clear that the video in question is old and the man was not killed by the lion.
