Fact Check: 2019 Viral Image From Patna Linked To Dhaka Infrastructure With False Claims

Date:

A picture showing an uncovered manhole on a road with heaps of garbage and plastic bottles scattered around it is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have shared the image claiming it to be from Dhaka, and flayed the mayor of the city for such a state of the neighbourhoods after rains.

A Facebook user posted the viral post, with a caption:

(English translation: Water of Dhaka city stuck in manhole, how will it come out? Rivers around Dhaka, yet there is no place for rain water to come out. This is the picture after opening the lid of a manhole. Then what is the condition of the whole Dhaka city? It is very easy to abuse and criticise another person. Surely these indecent elements were not left behind by Mayor Atiq or Tapas’ family members! First we should abuse ourselves for waterlogging, but the main task is to be aware. We argue a lot more than the right thing, yet we don’t see our own faults.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be fabricated.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the viral picture, our team identified a tweet, dated October 7, 2019, on a verified account. The picture in the tweet matches exactly with the viral picture, but there’s no much info about the location. Given that the picture was tweeted in 2019, there is no way it can be linked to a recent event.

Another news article in The Wire, dated October 9, 2019 and titled: How 330 mm of Rain Flushed Down 15 Years of Urban Development in Bihar, contains the viral image. As per its description, the picture is from Patna in Bihar, and shows plastic bottles and bags cleared from the sewer lines in the city.

We could not find a single credible source of news linking the image to Dhaka. Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show the condition of Dhaka’s infrastructure after heavy rainfall in the city, is misleading.
