Following a large-scale Ukrainian drone strike that reportedly damaged over 40 Russian military aircraft at five airbases ahead of the Istanbul peace talks, a video is doing the rounds on social media. It is being claimed that this is Russia’s retaliatory attack on Ukraine. The video features airstrikes in what appears to be a residential area, with massive fireballs and smoke rising from the ground.
A Facebook user posted the viral post with the following caption:
रूस का जवाबी हमला शुरू यूक्रेन के कई शहरों में मौजूद सैन्य और रक्षा ठिकानों पर रूस ने मिसाइल हमले शुरू कर दिए हैं। (English version: Russia’s counter attack begins. Russia has started missile attacks on military and defence bases in many cities of Ukraine.)

FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post and found the claims to be false.
Performing a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team spotted a social media post from July 2024, featuring the same video with a description that the video shows a Russian cruise missile strike on Kyiv, Ukraine.
Also, a Daily Mail video report on YouTube, dated July 9, 2024, states that on July 8, 2024, Russia launched Kh-101 missiles at multiple targets in Ukraine, including a hospital in Kyiv.
An Associated Press report from the same time confirmed that five Ukrainian cities were targeted in a large-scale missile attack. Among the sites hit was Ukraine’s largest children’s hospital, Okhmatdyt. While Ukraine accused Russia of targeting civilian areas, including the hospital, Russia denied the allegations and claimed it had only struck military sites.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show Russia’s retaliatory attack on Ukraine after it reportedly damaged over 40 Russian military aircraft, is false.
