FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Searching with relevant keywords, the NM team could not identify any credible reports or official announcements confirming such a policy by the Government of India. However, a post by the Press Information Burea Fact Check wing on X, dated November 28, 2024, has clarified that the claim is false.

The post further explained that senior citizens above 75 years, with only pension and interest income, are exempted from filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) under Section 194P of the Income Tax Act. And this exemption does not mean they are exempted from paying taxes. Taxes, if applicable, are computed and deducted by the specified bank before disbursing income.

Thus, the viral claim that all senior citizens above 75 years are exempted from paying taxes is False.
