FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked, and found the claim to be false.

Does coffee help with skin whitening?

Coffee is often touted as a beneficial ingredient in skincare due to its antioxidant properties, which can protect the skin from free radical damage and improve overall skin health. It contains caffeine and chlorogenic acids (CGA) that may help reduce inflammation, stimulate blood flow, and promote a brighter complexion when used as a scrub or mask. However, coffee does not have proven skin-whitening properties. Its effects are more related to exfoliation, which can help remove dead skin cells and enhance the skin’s natural radiance.

While coffee can improve texture and tone over time, claims of dramatic skin whitening should be viewed skeptically, as they lack scientific evidence. It’s essential to pair coffee-based treatments with proper skincare and sun protection to achieve healthy, glowing skin.

Is it safe to use shampoo on the skin?

According to Dr. D Dinesh Kumar, MBBS, MD, Dermatology, applying shampoo on the skin is not recommended as shampoos are specifically formulated for hair and scalp, not for facial or body skin. Shampoos often contain strong surfactants like sulfates to remove oil and dirt from hair, which can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and potential damage. Moreover, the pH level of shampoo is designed for hair and may disrupt the skin’s natural pH balance, increasing the risk of sensitivity and barrier dysfunction.

Can toothpaste effectively lighten your skin or make it fairer?

Dr. Dinesh explained, “Toothpaste is designed to clean teeth by removing tartar, debris, and food particles. Its abrasive qualities are safe for teeth, as they are composed of strong minerals like calcium that can withstand such action. However, our skin is much more delicate and cannot handle this level of abrasiveness.”

Using toothpaste on the skin can lead to irritation and potential damage because the skin’s structure is far more sensitive than teeth. Dermatologists warn against using toothpaste for skincare, as it can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier, leading to dryness, irritation, or even allergic reactions. Always opt for products designed specifically for skincare to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Dr Dinesh concluded that this mixture would irritate the skin, causing irritant dermatitis, which can lead to skin darkening. There is no “magic potion” for fairer skin. Although there are medically supervised methods to achieve a clearer complexion but the claim that this mixture can help is false. Always consult a dermatologist for safe and effective skincare.

Hence, we can conclusivey say that the viral clip claiming that a mixture of shampoo, coffee, and toothpaste can help achieve fairer skin is Misleading.
