Fact Check: Chhatra League And Anti-quota Activists’ Clash In Bangladesh Viral With False Communal Spin

Date:

A disturbing video showing a violent clash between two groups of men is being widely circulated on social media. In the footage, several individuals can be seen falling from the roof of a five-story building during the altercation. The clip is reportedly from Bangladesh. Many users claim that it depicts Islamists attacking Hindus in a hostel, causing them to fall while attempting to escape.

The video is shared with a caption: “Caution: Graphic content. Horrible scenes from Bangladesh. When Islamists attacked Hindus in a hostel, this is how they tried to escape and fell. If Hindus in India ignore this, such a situation might not be far off. Wake up.”

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile found the claim to be misleading.

Conducting a Reverse Image Search using the viral video keyframes, the NM team detected a media report in Bangladesh Journal, dated July 17, 2024.

(Source: Bangladesh Journal)

According to the report, the video depicts Chhatra League leaders and activists being thrown from a building’s roof during a clash with anti-quota activists in Chittagong’s Muradpur.

The report identifies Jalal Uddin Zubair as the leader of Haji Muhammad Mohsin College Chhatra League, who was seriously injured. In the hospital, the injured Zubair recounted the attack, stating he was on the roof during the incident.

Another Bangladeshi media outlet Prothomalo English confirms the same events. Notably, none of these reports mentions any communal angle.

We also found an extended video report on the same incident on the YouTube channel Maasranga News, titled: “Chhatra League workers are being thrown from the roof of a building in Muradpur, Chittagong”, dated July 16, 2024.

NewsMobile independently was not able to find any communal angle concerning this particular incident. Hence, it is confirmed that the video does not depict Hindus being thrown off the roof, but rather a clash between the Chhatra League and anti-quota activists in Muradpur, Bangladesh.
