Fact Check: Clipped Video of Delhi CM Kejriwal’s Speech Viral with Misleading Claims

Date:

A short clip of Arvind Kejriwal addressing a large gathering of people and quoting Mahabharat is doing the rounds on social media. He can be heard misquoting the characters in the story. Many social media users have shared the clip, mocking him for his mistake and claiming that this is what happens when you give a speech after drinking liquor.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: दारू पीके प्रवचन नही देना चाहिए वर्ना ऐसे ही शब्द इधर के उधर हो जाते है, (English translation: One should not give discourses after drinking liquor, otherwise similar words get scattered here and there.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral video, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video, we found a tweet, dated August 22, 2022, on the official and verified handle of Davender Sharma, private secretary of the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi. The initial keyframes of the video in the tweet match exactly with the viral video, and it seems like an extended version of the latter.

While Kejriwal did fumble on the names of Arjun and Krishna, he corrected himself later in his speech at 00:28, whereas the viral video ends abruptly just before he’s about to correct himself.

The description of a Facebook live stream (87-minutes), dated August 22, 2022, on the official handle of the Aam Aadmi Party, also states that it is a town hall organised by the party to discuss AAP’s manifesto for the health sector in Gujarat.

The keyframes starting at 55:54 till 56:12 match exactly with the viral video. Here too, Kejriwal corrects himself at 56:18, but this frame has been edited in the viral video clip.

Another version of the live stream on YouTube, dated August 22, 2022, with a title: Manish Sisodia पर CBI Raid के बाद Gujarat में Arvind Kejriwal की दमदार Latest Speech 🔥 | AAP Gujarat, begins when Kejriwal starts his speech. Here too, we can see him correct himself at 02:01 after fumbling with the names, proving that the viral video has been clipped, just before he’s about to correct himself, in order to mock the Delhi CM.

If Chief Minister Kejriwal was caught drunk during his rally, it would have made headlines immediately, but we could not find any credible news source informing us of the same.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video claiming Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal caught drunk during his rally is misleading.
