A video, claiming that the Howrah Bridge in Kolkata collapsed, has gone viral on social media. Many users have shared the video showing a truck and a motorbike crossing the bridge when suddenly the bridge collapsed and the truck straight away fell into the water. The motorbike rider coming from behind narrowly escaped.
A Facebook user posted the viral post (archive link) with the following caption:

Had the Howrah Bridge actually collapsed, it would have attracted media outlets’ immediate attention worldwide for coverage.
Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, the NM team found several related reports. A BBC report, dated September 10, 2024, revealed that the bridge in the video is Phong Chau, located in northern Vietnam. According to the report, over 60 people died when the bridge collapsed. The viral footage was captured by a dash cam in a car.

Several vehicles plunged into the river below as the bridge gave way. This incident took place during Typhoon Yagi, which caused heavy rainfall and landslides across many areas in Vietnam.
News outlets such as AP and The Guardian also covered the event and shared the viral video at the time.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming that the Howrah bridge collapsed recently, is false.
