Fact Check: Did India Today Mock Rahul Gandhi On Its Cover After Maharashtra Elections? Here’s The Truth

Date:

In the aftermath of the Maharashtra elections, where the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party alliance (Mahayuti) secured a decisive victory with 235 seats, the opposition parties, including Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray), and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar), were left with just 49 seats. Congress managed to win only 16.

Amid this significant political setback, an image claiming to show the recent India Today magazine cover targeting Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has gone viral on social media.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with the following caption:

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

The viral image, dated December 2, was showing Maharashtra’s map with text stating: “Maha Raja of Mishap” and “Maharashtra slips away as Rahul Gandhi redefines leadership… again!” But the NM team came to know that India Today magazine has not published any such covers criticising Rahul Gandhi. The magazine’s actual editions for December 2 do not match the claims.

The December 2 edition does not include a story about the Congress leader. Instead, its cover focuses on digital fraud with the headline: “Beware of the new big con”.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show India Today magazine mocking Rahul Gandhi after Maharashtra’s loss, is false.
