A video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is doing the rounds on social media, claiming that he has announced free electricity in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The post suggests that electricity will now be free of cost in both states under a new scheme.

NewsMobile fact-checked the claim and found it to be Misleading.
Searching with relevant keywords, the NM team found no credible news reports or official releases supporting the claim that electricity has been made free in either Bihar or Uttar Pradesh.
However, doing a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we traced it back to PM Modi’s official YouTube channel, where the full speech was uploaded on May 25, 2024. The video was from a rally held in Patliputra, Bihar, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
At 44 minutes 48 seconds in the same video, the Prime Minister can be heard saying, “This is such a scheme that you do not face any problem throughout your life and Modi has decided that your electricity bill should be zero… We have started the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme. Solar panels will be installed on the rooftops. Electricity will be generated from that. You will use that electricity for free as per your requirement and the government will buy the excess electricity and will pay you for it. And for doing this work, Modi will give ₹75,000 to every family for installing solar panels. You can register yourself online right now.”
Thus, we can conclusively say that the viral post claiming PM Modi has announced free electricity in Bihar and UP is Misleading.
