Fact Check: Viral Post Claiming ‘Deadliest Israeli Sniper’ Killed By Hamas Is Misleading

Date:

An image of a soldier with a sniper lying on the ground is widely shared on social media, claiming that the deadliest sniper in the Israeli Army, and commander of the Golan Brigade’s sniper unit, was killed.

The post reads: “Jack Oliver “Breaking News: Tel_Aviv Shaken Captain ‘Shafas Lavier’ — the deadliest sniper in the Israeli Army and commander of the Golan Brigade’s sniper unit — killed by a Qassam sniper. He was called in a week ago to target a terrifying ‘Resistanc’ sniper in Khan Yunis — but he became the target instead”.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Conducting a Reverse Image Search of the photograph, the NM team spotted a Washington Post photo feature, dated October 17, 2023, and titled: “In Photos: Scenes From The Israel-Gaza War”. This means that the viral image, incorrectly attributing to Shafas Lavier, was cropped from a Reuters photograph, dated October 13. The original photo depicted Israeli soldiers resting on a patch of grass at Kibbutz Be’eri, Israel.

Other news reports also confirm that the photo captures Israeli soldiers taking a break on a patch of grass at Kibbutz Be’eri after a mass infiltration by Hamas gunmen from Gaza Strip in southern Israel.

Thus, it is evident from the above information that the viral claim is misleading.
