An image displaying Earth’s night-and-day regions simultaneously over the African and European continents is making the rounds on social media, claiming that it is a rare visual.Â
Here’s the link to the above post.
FACT CHECKÂ
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.Â
Doing a Reverse Image Search, our team spotted a NASA article published in 2003, featuring the same viral image with a caption: ‘A Digital Sunset Over Europe and Africa’.Â
In the NASA article, it was clarified that the viral photo was not captured by a single spacecraft or astronaut. Instead, it was a digital composite created from archived images taken by various Earth-orbiting satellites and ocean-faring ships. The image was pieced together to showcase the stunning view of Earth’s night and day regions over the African and European continents.
As per NASA sources, these composite images can be generated for any location on Earth using the Earth and Moon Viewer web tool. Scientists utilise such images to interpret complex data and effectively communicate their understanding to others.Â
Thus, it is evident from the above information that a digitally-created image is falsely shared as simultaneous day and night regions of Earth.
