Using the InVid tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search with relevant keywords. This search directed us to various news articles that reported the same incident. According to Dainik Bhaskar, “A video has gone viral again today in Hamirpur, in which a woman’s domination has been seen. The domineering woman is seen walking out of a street with the pistol in one hand and a stick in the other.” After the video went viral, police started investigating the matter.
According to another news report, published by Zee News on May 19, 2022, the police investigation by Vivek Yadav, Circle Officer of Maudaha, states that the pistol recovered from the woman is fake. Actually, it is a lighter that looks like a pistol. During the investigation, it was found that a buffalo had entered the woman’s house and she had come out with a stick to drive away the buffalo. During this, some people in the village recorded this video.”
Searching further, we found a tweet by Hamirpur Police debunking the viral claim. The tweet text can be translated in English to: “Hamirpur – The pistol mentioned in the viral video/photo on social media platforms is not a pistol but a lighter, which was taken by the woman from children. The talk of intimidating someone with a pistol or a stick is completely wrong.”
