Fact Check: Does This Video Show Final Moments From Inside Of Titan Submersible Before Imploding? Here’s the Truth

Date:

A video, claiming to show the last video from the inside of the recently imploded Titan submersible, is doing the rounds on social media. Many users claim that five people inside the submarine saw the debris of Titanic and even made a video before dying.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: In the last scene, you can see five people sitting in the submarine. They also made a video of the Titanic, but little do they know that death is waiting for them in the Titanic, and they will never return alive. #titan #titanic #oceangate #submersible

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, our team traced a Youtube video, titled: Former Titan passenger describes underwater trip on sub, dated June 22, 2023, on the official channel of CBS News. The keyframes starting at 00:45 match with the viral clip, and the text in the top left corner states “Courtesy of Aaron Newman 2021.”

According to the description of the video, it shows an interview with Aaron Newman, an investor of OceanGate, and a passenger on the submersible in 2021. In the interview, Newman describes what it is like to be inside the Titan. Newman was the one shooting the video from the inside of Titan.

Searching further about the recent incident, news reports inform that the 5 deceased in the accident were OceanGate’s CEO Stockton Rush, British businessman Hamish Harding, an ex-French navy diver Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, and his son Suleman Dawood. There were no women in the submersible, yet in the viral video we can identify one woman.

Searching further for the members of the 2021 expedition, we traced a news article from Dailymail. The article shows a picture of all the mission specialists from the expedition and informs that Bridget Buxton accompanied Newman along with 3 other men on mission.

Checking for the connection between Bridget Buxton and Oceangate, we found a YouTube video informing that she is a nautical archaeologist, and according to NZ Herald, she had worked alongside Stockton Rush and travelled to the wreckage multiple times.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show the last video from the inside of the Titan submersible before imploding, is misleading.
