A video showing numerous people climbing a high border fence is widely shared on social media, claiming that people are trying to cross the US border, presumably from Mexico.
The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “The situation at the US border looks like a scene from The Walking Dead.”
Here’s the link to the above post.
FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.
Performing a Yandex Reverse Image, we identified a tweet, dated March 2, 2022, carrying the same viral video with a caption in Spanish language (English translation: “New attack on the Melilla fence: more than 2,000 illegal immigrants have tried to storm the border and more than 500 have succeeded, all our support to our FYCSE who protect us.”)
Searching for ‘Melilla Fence’, we found that the Melilla border fence forms part of Morocco–Spain border in the city of Melilla — one of two Spanish cities in North Africa. As per the Google Maps, the Melilla border fence resonates precisely with the visuals seen in the viral video.
Below is the comparison between screengrabs from the viral video and Google Street View.
A Spanish news organisation also reported the same incident in 2022 with a caption: “Assault on the fence of Melilla: more than 2,000 immigrants try to enter from Morocco.” An article by Reuters, dated March 2, 2022, says: “About 2,500 migrants and refugees from countries in sub-Saharan Africa have tried to cross the border fence separating the Spanish enclave of Melilla from Morocco, with about 500 managing to do so, in one of the largest influxes in recent years.”
Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video from the Morocco-Spain border is falsely shared as immigrants at the US border.
