Fact Check: Edited Video Viral As Saudi Player Ali Al-Bulayhi Preaching Islam to Messi During Match

Date:

A video is doing the rounds on social media, claiming that Saudi player Ali Al-Bulayhi is preaching Islam to Lionel Messi in the middle of the match.

The video is shared with the text: Leaked audio of Saudi player asking Messi to convert into Islam.

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.

We found the same video in a report by The Indian Express, with a headline Watch: Saudi player Al-Bulayhi squares up to Lionel Messi after the second goal, says “you will not win”.

Similar reports were also published by Times Now and The Sun.

Running another search, we found the audio in a video report by NewX, which was uploaded on September 4, 2014.

The video description reads: “Religious comments by Pakistan batsman Ahmed Shehzad to Sri Lanka player Tillakaratne Dilshan after their one-day international last Saturday are being investigated by the Pakistan Cricket Board. While the players were walking back to the dressing room in Dambulla, Sri Lanka, Shehzad was caught on-camera telling Dilshan “if you are a non-Muslim and turn Muslim, no matter whatever you do in your life, straight to heaven.” The same viral video can be seen at the 35-second point of the NewX bulletin, in which Shehzad advises Dilshan to convert to Islam as the two are returning to the changing room following Sri Lanka’s innings.

An NDTV report, dated September 4, 2014, has also reported the same incident. According to the report, “Religious comments by Pakistan batsman Ahmed Shehzad to Sri Lanka player Tillakaratne Dilshan after their one-day international are being investigated by the Pakistan Cricket Board.”

Thus, it is clear that the audio of a different video from 2014 has been imposed on the video of Ali Al-Bulayhi and Lionel Messi to spread a fake narrative.
