Fact Check: Viral Video of MP CM Shivraj Chouhan Advocating For Free Liquor Distribution Is Misleading

Date:

A video clip of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently has gone viral on social media, where he can be heard asking others to distribute so much liquor in the state that the people remain intoxicated.

Here’s the link to the above post.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be edited.

Running a Reverse Image Search on the video keyframes, the NM team traced a report in Punjab Kesari MP in June 2020. According to the report, the viral clip has been edited from a longer version of the video and is being shared with a misleading context.

The longer version of the viral clip has also been shared by Shivraj Singh Chouhan on his official Twitter account, dated January 2020.

He has shared the video with a caption: “There is uproar all around. Farmers are unable to sell paddy, loans are not being waived, youth are not getting unemployment allowance. The development works are also stalled. In such a situation, the government is intent on ruining the younger generation by opening liquor shops. We will not remain silent, we will fight.#MP_Demands_Answer.” (Translated from Hindi)

The original video makes it obvious that Chouhan was criticising the then Congress government in the state, which was in power from December 2018 to March 2020.

In the video, Chouhan is criticising the Congress government for giving liquor licences and allowing people to open more and more liquor shops. We noticed that the viral clip has been taken out of context and is being shared to make it seem like it was an order from Shivraj Chouhan himself, after taking over as chief minister of Madhya Pradesh.

After the video went viral, it was posted by the official Twitter handle of Shivraj Chouhan in June 2020, with a caption: “Strict legal action will be taken against whoever is sharing the fake video on WhatsApp and tweet issued by the Dirty Tricks Department of Congress. This is the original video. There is no place for petty politics in Madhya Pradesh!”

So, now it’s clear that the viral Facebook post has been edited and is shared with a false narrative.
