India is set to host the G20 summit in Delhi on September 9-10. The government is renovating and restructuring the streets of Delhi. Meanwhile, an image of G20 hoarding along with green curtains put up on the side of the road is going viral on social media.
Many users on social media claim that the viral image is from Delhi and criticised the government for hiding their failure by covering slums with banners and curtains ahead of the G20 summit.
A Facebook user shared this image and wrote, “देखिए कैसे एक झटके में दिल्ली से गरीबी मिट गई… मुझे लगता है कि गरीबी मिटाने का काम कर रहे महान एनजीओ संस्थाओं को तंबू, पंडाल, होर्डिंग का साइड बिजनेस भी करना चाहिए.” [English translation: See, poverty was eradicated from Delhi in one stroke. I think that great NGOs working to eradicate poverty should also do side business of tents, pandals and hoardings.]

FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be misleading.
Running a Reverse Image Search, NewsMobile traced the same picture in a Hindustan Times report, dated May 6, 2023. According to the report, the viral image is from Jogeshwari slums on the Western Express Highway in Mumbai. The caption of the tweet reads: “Green curtains put up to conceal the view of Jogeshwari slums on Western Express Highway, in wake of the ongoing G20 Summit under Indian presidency, in Mumbai, India, on Thursday, December 15, 2022.”

Another report by Gujarati Midday, dated December 16, 2022, also carries a similar image. According to the report, a slum adjacent to the highway at Jogeshwari on the Western Express Highway has been covered with green cloth as its delegation will visit the National Park in Borivali today after a three-day meeting of the G20 Development Working Group in Mumbai. Similarly, the lower portion of the flyover has also been cordoned off with white cloth at many places on the highway.

Several other articles have also mentioned about the giant sheets and billboards covering the slums of Mumbai. Click here and here to read the report.
Meanwhile, the government fact-check wing, PIB, has clarified that viral image is old and from Mumbai.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral image is from 2022 event in Mumbai, NOT related to the current G20 summit in Delhi.
