A video featuring the image of an Australian cricketer Andrew Tye — wearing the Indian Premier League (IPL) jersey of Rajasthan Royals — is widely shared on social media, claiming that “Australian cricketer Andrew Tye left IPL, and went to his country, saying, I don’t understand how Indian companies and government can spend so much money on IPL when people there need hospital.”
Here’s the link to the viral post.
FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.
However, we could not find any recent news reports regarding Andrew Tye’s statement about leaving the IPL. But news reports, dated April 2021, confirm that Tye had made a similar comment at that time. The Economic Times report, dated April 26, 2021, mentions that Tye, who was playing for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, had withdrawn from the tournament due to the increasing number of Covid-19 deaths in India.
According to a report by NDTV, dated April 26, 2021: “Australia and Rajasthan Royals pacer Andrew Tye decided to leave midway from the IPL as he feared getting “locked out” of his own country in the wake of a Covid-19 surge in India, and claimed that some of his compatriots in the league are considering the same step.”
It should be noted that due to the surge in Covid-19 cases in India, a significant portion of the matches in the 2021 IPL were held in the United Arab Emirates.
We also came across an India Today article, dated December 23, 2022, which listed unsold players from the mini-auction for IPL 2023. Andrew Tye was among the unsold overseas players with a base price of ₹1 crore. Tye had previously played for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL in 2022.
Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old statement of Andrew Tye quitting IPL is viral out of context, with misleading claims.
