Fact Check: Old Video of Aamir Khan Accepting Failure of ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’ Goes Viral As Recent

Date:

Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan-starrer film Laal Singh Chaddha has been amidst controversy for a long time now. #BoycottLaalSinghChaddha was trending long before the movie was even released. Various Hindu groups in the country have demanded a ban on Khan’s movies for allegedly hurting their religious sentiments through his 2014 blockbuster PK and his comments about how India has become an intolerant country to live in.

Against this backdrop, a viral video of Aamir Khan, admitting to the film’s failure and accepting that the movie is a flop show, is doing the rounds on social media.

A Facebook user posted the viral video with a caption: बधाई हो बॉयकोटियों… #लाल सिंह चड्डा फिल्म “फ्लॉप” साबित हुई… अब तो कराचीवुड फिल्म इंडस्ट्री के सुपर स्टार भांड ने भी कुबूल कर लिया… (English translation: Congratulations boys… #LaalSinghChaddha movie proved to be “Flop”… Now even the superstar Bhand of Karachiwood film industry has accepted…)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be misleading.

Looking closely at the viral video, we noticed Hindi Rush written on the top-right corner of the screen. Conducting a Google Keyword Search for the same led us to the website of Hindi Rush  an online Hindi media platform for daily updates on the Entertainment industry.

Investigating further for the viral video on their YouTube channel, we found a 3-minute video, dated November 27, 2018, with a title: Aamir Khan ने Thugs Of Hindostan के FLOP होने पर मांगी माफ़ी, माना ये है WORST MOVIE. The clip from 00:37 seconds to 1:03 matches the viral video. The only difference is that the viral video is zoomed in and cropped further on Aamir Khan.

Khan can be seen speaking the exact words as in the viral video. He is seen taking full responsibility for the failure of his film Thugs of Hindostan, released on November 8, 2018.

Similar clips had also been published  on the official YouTube channels of NDTV and Zoom  in November 2018.

The full interview of Khan on Thugs of Hindostan’s failure [Title:  Aamir Khan Takes Responsibility of Thugs of Hindostan’s Failure & Talks About Salute, SRK, dated November 27, 2018] had also been uploaded on the Youtube channel, DesiMartini official YouTube channel of the online media platform for the entertainment industry news.

Here too, the video frames from 7:12 to 7:38 match exactly with the viral video, thereby confirming that the video has been edited.

Various news articles from media houses like The Indian Express and BBC News Hindi, have also informed about Khan’s reaction to the failure of his film at the box-office.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video, showing Aamir Khan admitting Laal Singh Chaddha’s failure at the box-office, is misleading.
