Using the InVid Tool, we extracted keyframes from the viral video and performed a Reverse Image Search. This search directed us to a website that carried the longer version of the same video on September 17, 2017. The article read: “Yet another Ukrainian military ammunition dump has gone up in a series of huge explosions, sending huge, apocalyptic fireballs into the sky for hours. The fire and explosions occurred at a logistics base where 200,000 tons of ammunition was stockpiled. Ukraine’s government blamed saboteurs for the incident.”
Searching further, we found the screengrab of the viral video published in a news article by Daily Mail dated September 27, 2017. According to the report, Russia allegedly dropped bombs in Ukraine with the help of drones, causing a massive fire in the warehouse where 188,000 tons of ammunition was stored.
We could also find the same video in a news report published on the YouTube channel of IBTimes UK dated September 27, 2017. The video description read, “Explosions at a military ammunition depot in central Ukraine were seen in the early hours of September 27. Blasts also occurred late on September 26 at the military base near Kalynivka in the Vynnytsya region, injuring one person.”
Thus, it is evident from the above information that an old video is being falsely linked to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Therefore, the viral claim is misleading.
