Fact Check: Old Video Of Vandalism In Bangladesh Shared As Recent One From West Bengal

Date:

A video of a mob vandalising and setting fire to vehicles is doing rounds on social media with a claim that the video is from West Bengal.

Facebook users are sharing the video with the claim, “নাগপুরের বজরং দলের জঙ্গি গোষ্ঠীর, মুসলমানদের উপর নির্যাতনের চিত্র বিশ্বের কাছে তুলে ধরার জন্য অনুরোধ রইলো।

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found that the video is not from India.

We extracted the keyframes of the video and ran them through Reverse Image Search. The search led us to the same video on YouTube that was uploaded by Prothom Alo on November 27, 2023. The title of the video read (translated via Google), “Torchlight procession and vehicle vandalism in support of the blockade in Sylhet | Sylhet.”

We found multiple news reports from 2023 covering the incident. The reports can be seen here, here and here. As per the reports, BNP leaders and activists held a torchlight procession in Sylhet in support of a blockade. However, when the procession reached the Subid Bazar intersection, a rickshaw parked on the side of the road, a CNG-powered autorickshaw and an ambulance heading to Amberkhana from the Pathantula area were set on fire.” This confirms that the video is from Bangladesh.

Moreover, West Bengal police also took to X and clarified that the video was being circulated with false claims. The post read, ” The attached video of arson and vandalism is being circulated on social media from certain quarters as an incident of Malda district. This claim is completely FAKE. This video captures events of November, 2023 in the Sylhet region of Bangladesh and has no connection whatsoever with yesterday’s incident in Malda. Circulating such fake videos amounts to blatant attempts at triggering communal discord through rumour-mongering. This is a punishable offence. We put on record that such mischievous efforts at disrupting communal harmony shall be treated with ZERO TOLERANCE and the wrongdoers shall be most sternly dealt with as per law. The situation in Malda is under control. We appeal to all not to heed baseless rumours on social media and keep calm.”

Thus, from the above fact check, it is clear that the video is an old one form Bangladesh and not a recent one from West Bengal.
