Fact Check: Picture of Rohingya Muslims shared as migrant crisis in India is old

Date:

A photo of a distressed man carrying an old woman on his back is being circulated on different social media sites.

The caption of the post reads: “मोदी जी, क्या आप इनके चेहरे की बेबसी को आप पढ़ पा रहे हैं?
कुछ तो करो सरकार..”

(Translation- Modi Ji, can you read the helplessness of his face? Government, do something)

The caption suggests that the picture is taken in India, and shows migrants trying to get home amid the ongoing national lockdown due to COVID-19.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the picture and found that it is old and unrelated to the ongoing migrant crisis.

On putting the picture through Reverse Image Search, we found a report published on November 8, 2017, featuring the same picture. The headline of the report read ‘Rohingya refugees at Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh’.

At the end of the article, the photo credit was given to a Bangladeshi photographer, Mobarak Hossain.

We found the original picture on his Facebook account published on September 10, 2017.

The team at NewsMobile has also reached out to Hossain to get a confirmation about the authenticity of the picture. The reply is awaited and we shall update the article post that.

However, our investigation definitely proves that the picture is old and is not related to the ongoing economic crisis due to COVID-19 in India.
