A Facebook user posted the image with a caption: “The Film Federation of India has selected Swatantrya Veer Savarkar as one of the official entries from India for the Oscars 2025. Producers Anand Pandit, Sandeep Singh, and Randeep Hooda are overjoyed by this recognition and shared their excitement.”

A keyword search on Google about India’s official entry to the Oscars led the NM team to a post on X by ANI, dated September 23, 2024. The post featured an official statement from FFI, confirming that the Kiran Rao-directed Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official submission to the Oscars 2025 in the Best International Feature Film category.

The producers of Swatantrya Veer Savarkar also posted on Instagram, claiming the same, which added to the confusion among fans.

In an interview with India Today, FFI president Ravi Kottarakara said, “I don’t know what’s mentioned by the producers. However, as the parental body, we have already announced Laapataa Ladies as the official entry.”
Kottarakara further explained that filmmakers have the option to independently submit their movies to the Academy. He said, “One can also submit their films independently to the Academy. There is a provision for filmmakers to do that. However, that too, is only a submission. But it has nothing to do with the federation. We have already released a statement announcing our choice.”
In another interview with Hindustan Times City, the FFI president clarified, “They (the makers of Savarkar) have given some wrong communication. I am going to release a statement about it as well. Only Laapataa Ladies has been sent for Oscars from India officially.”
Thus, we can conclusively say that only Laapataa Ladies is India’s official entry to Oscars 2025, NOT Swatantrya Veer Savarkar.
