Fact Check: RBI Imposing Penalty For Having Accounts In Multiple Banks? Don’t Fall For False Claim

Date:

An image claiming that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will impose a penalty on individuals for maintaining accounts in more than one bank is doing the rounds on social media.

A Facebook user posted the image with a caption: आरबीआई गवर्नर खुद 10 बैंकों में खाता है और सिक्स  बैंक में भी खाता  है और ज्ञानदे रहा है (RBI Governor himself has accounts in 10 banks and also accounts in six banks, and imparting knowledge.)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Searching with relevant keywords, the NM team found no credible news reports or announcements from RBI about imposing a penalty for holding accounts in multiple banks.

However, we came across a post on X by the Press Information Bureau’s fact-check wing, dated December 8, 2024, clarifying that RBI has not issued any such guidelines penalising individuals for maintaining accounts in more than one bank, and the viral claim is false.

Thus, it is confirmed that the claim regarding RBI imposing a penalty on individuals for holding accounts in multiple banks is baseless.
