Fact Check: This picture of a damaged road is not related to cyclone Amphan

Date:

After super cyclone Amphan created havoc in West Bengal and parts of Odisha, several pictures and videos started doing the rounds on social media.

One such picture is of a damaged road, which is being shared with a claim that the road was ‘blown away’ by the storm.

“এই প্রথম দেখলাম ঝড়ে রাস্তা উড়িয়ে নিয়ে চলে গেছে” the caption read in Bengali.

(Translation: This is the first time I saw that the road has blown away in the storm..)

The posts don’t directly claim that the pictures are from Cyclone Amphan, however, the pictures were circulated after the cyclone created severe landfalls in coastal states and the comments on the posts are a clear indication that people believe the picture to be a recent one.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found it to be misleading.

We put the image through Reverse Image Search and found that the picture was shared on December 26, 2019, by a Malaysian Facebook page.

NewsMobile couldn’t independently verify the origin of the picture. But, from the above information, we can gather that the picture has existed on the internet way before cyclone Amphan came into being and created havoc. The fact that the correct information isn’t mentioned with the claim, means it was meant to mislead people.
