Fact Check: Tsunami Warning Post For Delhi, UP, Rajasthan, Mumbai, And Gujarat Is Misleading

On February 17, 2025, an earthquake jolted the people of Delhi out of their beds and homes. The tremor accompanied a booming sound, adding to fear and panic.

With the recent spate of earthquakes and tremors being felt across the country, there was no surprise that soon there would be posts going viral on social media predicting future earthquakes or tsunamis.

One such Instagram post by ankuch_sad_shayri claimed that on March 5, Delhi, Jaipur, Nepal, Mumbai, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Noida will feel strong tremors, resulting in a tsunami.

The post itself was shared by 44.1K and liked by 51.6K.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found the claims to be false.

The primary reason is that on March 5, 2025, there were no reports of earthquakes around Delhi-NCR or tsunamis in or around the Arabian Sea or Bay of Bengal.

On Wednesday, Manipur experienced two earthquakes with magnitudes above 4 and up to 5.4, but neither triggered a tsunami.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 struck the Myanmar-India border region on Wednesday. Therewas no tremors in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh. Even the National Centre for Seismology, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, on its website, has mentioned earthquakes that hit Manipur and the India-Mayanmar border.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post claiming that an earthquake would strike specific regions is Misleading.
