Fact Check: Video Of Avalanche From Sikkim Falsely Shared As That From Amarnath In J&K

A video has gone viral online, claiming that an avalanche hit Jammu and Kashmir, and people on the Amarnath yatra are trapped under the snow.

The Facebook post reads: अमरनाथ की यात्रा में बर्फ का पहाड़ गिरा सैकड़ों लोग दबे (English translation: Hundreds of people buried under snow during Amarnath Yatra)

NewsMobile fact-checked the post, and found it to be false.

Putting the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search, we identified a tweet by Hindustan Times, dated April 4, 2023, where the same video was said to be from Sikkim.

The video was shared with a caption: #SikkimAvalanche | Videos shows moment when #avalanche hit in #Sikkim The incident happened on a road 14th mile on Jawaharlal Nehru road connecting #Gangtok with #Nathula at the India-China border.

According to the report, a massive avalanche struck Sikkim’s Nathula border area on April 4, 2023, killing seven people.

The video of the incident had been shared by Aaj Tak and EastMojo.

We could not find any news about the recent avalanche in Amarnath to corroborate the viral claim. Hence, it is clear that the claim is false.
