A viral post claiming Indian athlete Avinash Sambale clinched India’s first gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics is doing the rounds on social media. Many users claim it to be from the 2024 Olympics, and praising the athlete for his achievement.
A Facebook user posted the viral post (archive link) with the following caption:

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.
Initially, checking the official Olympics website India’s medal tally for the Paris Olympics 2024, the NM team came to know that India secured three bronze medals in Shooting at the time of filing this fact-check report. So, India’s total medal count is three, placing them at 64th in the overall medal table. There is no mention of any gold medal in this article.
Searching further, we discovered a longer version of the viral video on the official tube channel of The New Indian Express. As per the caption, the video shows “Asian Games: Avinash Sable becomes 1st Indian to win 3000m steeplechase.”
It is to be noted that the Asian Games 2022 were held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8, 2023. Originally scheduled for 2022, the games were postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. We found the same video on the olympics.com website, which confirms that it shows Avinash Sable winning the gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase at the Asian Games held in 2023.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show India’s first gold medallist at the France Olympics 2024, is false.
