A shocking video of some men beating up a woman is widely being shared on the internet with a claim that upper caste men are flogging a Dalit woman for using their well to fetch water in Uttar Pradesh.
The caption of the video read: ‘उत्तर प्रदेश में एक दलित लड़की को कथित ऊंची जाति के लोगों द्वारा कूंए से पानी लेने के दोष? में बुरी तरह पीटा गया।लोकतांत्रिक भारत के लिए यह बेहद शर्मनाक घटना है।सरकार को चाहिए दोषियों पर कानूनी कार्रवाई हो।वीडीयो को शेयर कीजिए।’.

On putting the keyframes of the video though Reverse Image Search, we found a report by Zee News Gujarat, dated May 27, 2020, featuring the same video. The title of the report read, ‘Video of a woman beaten in Chhotaudepur district went viral’.
According to the report, a 16-year-old girl from Bilvant village, Chhotaudepur district, Gujarat fled with her boyfriend and returned home after a few days. She was then beaten by her family members and some men from the village on May 21, 2020, for eloping.
The incident was also covered by The Times of India on May 28, 2020.
According to the report, police registered an offence against 15 persons for rioting, assault, criminal intimidation, sexual harassment, violation of Information Technology Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
We further found a reply by Chhotaudepur district collector on a tweet featuring the same video, where he confirmed that Rangpur police has initiated FIR against all accused seen in the video.
