Fact Check: Video of Mexicans Protesting Against Lopez Obrador Government Falsely Linked to Pakistan Crisis

Date:

One video showing a huge crowd of people protesting on the streets is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have shared the clip claiming that it is from Pakistan and Imran Khan’s supporters are protesting against the military. People are anticipating a civil war in the country.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: अब होगा गृह युद्ध जिहादी देश में इस्लामाबाद में इमरान खान के सपोर्ट वालों की भीड़ की ताजा वीडियो देखो पाकिस्तान की फौज के खिलाफ ऐसा माहौल पहले कभी नही बना । आपस में ही लड़ मरेंगे ये जिहादी। जय सनातन (English translation: Now there will be a civil war in Jihadi country. FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we traced a tweet by one Cuban journalist, Yannis Estrada, published on February 27, 2023. The video in the tweet matches exactly with the viral clip and the caption informs that the people were shouting “Fuera Lopez” (Get out Lopez).

Conducting a Google Keyword Search to know more about the protest, we spotted a YouTube video, dated February 27, 2023 and titled: Thousands gather in Mexico City to protest presidential cut backs on electoral process, on the official handle of The Times and The Sunday Times

Watching the video, we got to know that the protest took place at Zocalo Square in Mexico city against President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s administration over reforms intending to shrink the electoral authority in the country. More than 500,000 people attended the protest.

Multiple keyframes and nearby landmarks in the viral video match with the ones in the YouTube video, proving that the viral clip is from Mexico.

Also, a news report on BBC News published on the same day, with a title: Mexico protests: Huge crowds rally against electoral reform, shows an aerial view of the protest and corroborates the claims made in the YouTube video. Here too, we can see a huge wave of people chanting “Fuera Lopez” and the location in the image matches with the location in the video.

Similar reports were also found  in Washington Post, The New York Times, and Reuters as well.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral video claiming supporters of Imran Khan came out on the streets of Islamabad to fight the military is false.
