Fact Check: Viral Clip Of Villagers In Kashmir Aiding Injured Army Flight Crew Falsely Linked To Rajasthan MiG-21 Crash

Date:

A video showing few civilians and military men helping the injured flight crew members is doing the rounds on social media. Many users have shared the video claiming that the injured people are survivors of the MiG-21 crash that occurred on May 8, 2023, in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with a caption: MIG – 21 Aircraft ट्रेनिग के दौरान सूरतगढ़ में क्रैश होगया पायलट सुरक्षित है पर 2 महिलाओं की मौके पर ही मौत (English translation: MIG – 21 Aircraft crashed in Suratgarh during training, pilot is safe but two women died on the spot)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral post, and found it to be false.

Running a Reverse Image Search of the video keyframes, we traced multiple Instagram posts with the same claims. Under one such post, we found a few comments informing that the viral claims are false as there are no hills in Suratgarh.

In another post, a user commented that the video is from Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir.

Conducting a Google Keyword Search to check the authenticity of the video, we identified a YouTube video on the verified channel Greater Kashmir – a media house based out of Srinagar, Kashmir, dated May 4, 2023 and titled: Residents come to rescue of pilots, technician after army chopper crash lands in Kishtwar.

The video seems like a longer version of the viral video as several keyframes match with the latter. The description and the title of the video confirm that it is from the Kishtwar region in Kashmir.

Also, a tweet on the official handle of the Northern Command of the Indian Army, dated May 6, 2023, showcases three images that match the keyframes of the viral video and the caption confirms that villagers of Machna, Kishtwar, helped the aircrew, who made a precautionary landing on the banks of River Marua. The tweet thanked the residents for extending their support to the injured crew.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show the survivors of the MiG-21 crash in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, is false.
