The image is shared with a caption: Zelensky’s newest recruits. Off to the meat grinder. They Are just KIDS! 17-year old Ukrainian girls are being lured into Zelensky’s military. FACT CHECK

NewsMobile found the claim to be misleading.

Checking the image with relevant keywords, the NM team found the viral image was posted on the official Facebook page of The Taras Shevchenko KNU Military Institute, dated June 11, 2024. The post states that the institute honoured the memory of fallen graduates.

The report further adds that the Rector of KNU Vladimir Bugrov, the management of the Military Institute, officers, military chaplains, cadets, and relatives attended the commemoration. Military chaplain Sergiy Dmitriyev and other clergy members led the prayer. Rector Bugrov emphasised: “Heroes don’t die; they live on in our hearts and souls.”

Additionally, a memorial plaque was unveiled in honour of military journalist Oleksiy Chubashev near the educational and training complex of the Department of Military Journalism.

The viral image, along with 24 other pictures from the event, has no connection to young girls joining the Ukrainian army. It was taken during a memorial service to honour the fallen soldiers.

A similar report from the Ukrainian media outlet Kyivvlada, covering the same event on June 11, 2024, mentions: “the Military Institute of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv honoured the fallen graduates.”

Therefore, it is clear that the viral image, claiming that young Ukrainian girls are being forced to fight against Russia, is misleading. In fact, it shows students from the Military Institute of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv paying tribute to their fallen cadets.
