Fact Check: Viral Post Showing Images of Culprits Are Not From Godhra Massacre, But 2008 Ahmedabad Serial Blast

An image surfaced on social media featuring a list of 49 men, claiming them to be responsible for the tragic incident on February 27, 2002, near the Godhra railway station in Gujarat, India. The incident involved a fire inside the Sabarmati Express, resulting in the deaths of 59 Hindu pilgrims and karsevaks returning from Ayodhya. The post alleges that these individuals, identified as Islamists, deliberately set fire to the train, leading to the deaths of 56 individuals, including 20 children.

A Facebook user posted with a caption: ये वही हैं जिन्होंने फरवरी 2002 में गोधरा में 56 कार सेवकों को जिसमे 20 बच्चे भी थे, ट्रेन में जिंदा जला दिया था। आग लगाने से पहले इन्होंने ट्रेन की दोनो बोगियों को लॉक कर दिया था ताकि कोई बाहर न निकल सकें (English translation: They are the same individuals who burnt 56 karsevaks, including 20 children, alive in a train in Godhra in February 2002. Before setting on fire, they had locked both the bogies of the train so that no one could come out.)

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be false.

Through a Reverse Image Search, the NM team found same picture on Facebook, dated February 18, 2022, with a caption: “A Special designated court in Ahmedabad awards death penalty to 38 convicts in 2008 Ahmedabad Serial bomb blast case, which claimed 54 lives and injured more than 200 people. Eleven convicts have been sentenced to life imprisonment.”

With a keyword search, we traced a report by Hindustan Times, Dated February 18, 2022, with a headline: “2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts: 38 convicts awarded death penalty. Full list.”

The names of all the 49 terrorists in the picture exactly matches with the prisoners’ names in this case.
