Fact Check: Viral Video of The Great Khali Eating Mangoes Falsely Linked To UP Govt’s Nameplate Order

Date:

A video of renowned wrestler The Great Khali, also known as Dalip Singh Rana, eating mangoes from a Muslim vendor’s cart has gone viral on social media. Many users claim that Khali is protesting against UP government’s decision to mandate nameplates on shops.

The Uttar Pradesh government recently issued an order for shop owners along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their names, which has sparked controversy. The Association for Protection of Civil Rights filed a petition in the Supreme Court against this decision. On July 22, 2024, the apex court issued an interim stay on the order and notified three states, including UP. The next hearing is scheduled for July 26.

The video is shared on Facebook with a caption: “सोनू सूद के बाद द ग्रेट खली ने मुस्लिम भाइयों से फल खाकर नेम प्लेट वाले नियमों का विरोध किया।” (English version: See below.👇)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above claim, and found it to be MISLEADING.

Checking Khali’s social media accounts, the NM team found that he posted the video on Instagram on July 11, 2024 without any caption. This predates UP government’s nameplate order, which was first discussed on July 17, and instructed statewide by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on July 19.

Further investigation revealed that the controversy began in Muzaffarnagar, where local police ordered shop operators to display their names on shops along the Kanwar Yatra route. This directive was shared on the Muzaffarnagar Police’s official handle on July 17. Therefore, it is clear that Khali’s video, posted on July 11, has no connection to UP government’s later decision on namplates.

Dalip Singh Rana, aka The Great Khali, is a famous Indian wrestler who began his career in 2000, and has appeared on the reality show Bigg Boss. He joined the BJP in 2022, and participated in various election campaigns for the party.
Thus, it is confirmed that the video of The Great Khali eating mangoes from a Muslim vendor’s cart is not related to UP government’s nameplate directive.
