Unmasking Falsehoods: 5 Top Debunked News Of Indian Elections 2024

As the first phase of voting begins for the Lok Sabha Elections, the digital landscape has become inundated with information, ranging from the factual to the dubious. Let’s take a look:

A widely circulated video on social media purportedly shows Congress leader Rahul Gandhi resigning from the party, citing reasons related to his faith and corruption allegations. However, fact-checkers have revealed the video to be manipulated and discovered that the original footage was from a different event where Rahul Gandhi was submitting nomination papers in Wayanad. The audio in the viral video was generated using AI technology, altering Gandhi’s words to fabricate a resignation statement. The AI detector indicated that approximately 58% of the audio was artificially created.

Ahead of the Elections, a screenshot circulating on social media showed a pre-poll survey from the Hindi newspaper Dainik Bhaskar, predicting INDIA bloc’s lead in 10 states and a complete washout of the National Democratic Alliance from southern states. However, fact-checkers discovered the screenshot to be false. Analysis revealed that the word “India” was misspelt in the viral screenshot, and no such survey report existed in the newspaper’s April 13 edition. Dainik Bhaskar confirmed the screenshot’s falsity on its official platforms.

Another video doing the rounds features Bollywood actor Aamir Khan cautioning voters against false promises and urging support for Congress has been widely circulated on social media. However, fact-checking reveals the video to be a deep fake, with irregularities detected in lip-syncing and keyframes tracing back to a genuine promo from Aamir Khan’s show Satyamev Jayate. Khan’s spokesperson has also denied his involvement and filed an FIR, emphasizing Khan’s apolitical stance throughout his career.

Another video on social media shows BJP members being attacked in Manipur. A thorough fact-check by NewsMobile revealed the post to be false. Further investigation uncovered that the video was a recycled clip from 2017 featuring BJP’s Bengal unit President Dilip Ghosh being heckled in Darjeeling. This incident had been previously covered by various media outlets. NewsMobile had also debunked the same video in 2020 and 2022 when it was falsely linked to other election events.

During a campaign in Karnataka, a news snippet alleging bias towards Muslims by Siddaramaiah surfaced on social media, allegedly aiming to stir controversy and sway Hindu sentiments against him. However, a thorough fact-check by NewsMobile revealed the claim to be false. No such report was found in local Kannada newspapers, and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah himself denounced the clip as fake, filing a police complaint against unknown perpetrators. He attributed the fabrication to elements supported by a coalition of the BJP and JDS, emphasizing the need to combat deceptive tactics and fake news during elections. This incident underscores the importance of vigilance against misinformation and the commitment to uphold truth in the electoral process.

Amidst the cacophony of information surrounding the General Elections, fact-checking initiatives serve as invaluable guardians of truth, debunking misinformation and upholding the integrity of the democratic process. NewsMobile is determined and will continue to debunk such fake news that is a deterrent to a democratic process and a hindrance to free and fair electoral processes.
