On August 10, a student march towards the Legislative Assembly in Ranchi, Jharkhand, turned violent as protesting students clashed with police. Amid reports of lathi-charging and tear-gas use, a video showing people throwing stones at security barricades has gone viral on social media. Those sharing the clip claim it shows violence during the recent Ranchi student protest.
The video shows a man walking with a crowd while holding a stone. As the protesters approach a barricade, he throws the stone across it. Other people in the crowd are also seen throwing objects, while some individuals can be seen carrying BJP flags.
A Facebook user posted the viral post with the following caption:

NewsMobile investigated the viral post and found the claims to be false.
To verify the claim, we conducted a reverse image search using keyframes from the viral video. This led us to a video report published by the YouTube channel The Sutra on February 22, 2026. The viral footage appears in the report, establishing that it predates the August 10 Ranchi protest.
According to the report, the footage was recorded in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where BJP and Congress workers clashed outside the Congress office on February 21. Members of both sides were reportedly involved in stone-pelting.
Further keyword searches led us to reports by The Indian Express and Hindustan. According to these reports, the BJP had announced plans to surround Congress offices in several cities over the controversial “shirtless” protest staged by Youth Congress workers during the India AI Impact Summit at Bharat Mandapam in Delhi.
In Indore, BJP youth workers arrived outside the Congress office on February 21, where Congress workers were already present. What began with heated sloganeering between the two groups escalated into a violent confrontation. Stones, tomatoes and water bottles were thrown, injuring a police sub-inspector and several media personnel. Police eventually used water cannons to disperse the crowd.
An ANI report further stated that police registered counter-FIRs at the Pandharinath police station based on complaints from both sides and began investigating the incident using CCTV footage.
The location of the confrontation in Indore can also be identified through Google Maps, further corroborating the video’s actual location.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show people throwing stones at security barricades during the recent Ranchi student protest, is false.
