Photos showing broken idols of Hindu deities, Saraswati and Kali, are widely circulating on social media. It’s claimed that ahead of the puja season they were deliberately destroyed in a communal attack targeting Hindu faith and artisans in West Bengal’s Shantipur.
A Facebook user posted the viral post with the following caption:

Around 50–60 Kali and Saraswati idols, painstakingly crafted by potter Jayanta Das, were vandalised outside his workshop, in front of Loknath Temple near Matal Garh, Shantipur.
The miscreants struck in the morning, smashing these sacred idols meant for puja, a direct attack on Hindu faith and the livelihood of artisans. This is the latest episode in TMC-ruled Bengal’s rising wave of anti-Hindu hatred: a Maa Kali idol beheaded in Sarshuna, a Jagaddhatri idol decapitated in Mandirbazar, and now Saraswati idols destroyed.

A Reverse Image Search of the viral photos identified a report by Dainik Bhaskar, stating that the incident occurred in Mathalgarh area of Shantipur, Nadia district, on the intervening night of January 5 and 6.
According to the report, the idols belonged to local potter Jayanta Das. Following an argument between two locals and Das’ son, the potter shut his shop. Due to the upcoming puja season, several idols were kept along the roadside.
The next morning, the idols were found damaged. CCTV footage helped police identify the accused as two brothers, Ashit Dey and Amit Dey.
Police clarified that the vandalism occurred due to a personal dispute and that the accused were reportedly intoxicated at the time. Officials categorically stated that there was no communal or religious angle to the incident.
A report by The Times of India quoted the potter saying that around 85 idols were damaged, causing losses of approximately ₹1 lakh. Police told the newspaper that no political or religious motive had been found during the investigation.
The West Bengal Police, in a post on X, also said that attempts were being made to spread misinformation and communal disharmony. A case has been registered and any attempt to communalise the incident on social media would be dealt with strictly.
Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show religious idols deliberately destroyed in a communal attack in West Bengal’s Shantipur, is fabricated.
