A photo of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru has been doing rounds on social media claiming that it was taken when the “people trashed Nehru on China War failure”.

कार्यक्रम की अध्यक्षता कर रहे मुख्य अतिथि आर्य संन्यासी स्वामी विद्यानन्द विदेह अपने मंच से उठे और नेहरू को जोरदार थप्पड जड दिया..!! और माइक अपनी ओर करके संन्यासी बोले… “आर्य कही से आए नही, यही के मूल निवासी है। सबूत मे हूं… मेरे बाप-दादा सब यही पैदा हुए… उनके बाप- दादा सब यही पैदा हुए, लेकिन आप इस देश के मूल निवासी नही… आपकी रगो मे हिन्दुस्तानी नही अरबी ख़ून हैं। आपकी जगह पटेल प्रधनमंत्री होते तो हम चीन से हारते नहीं, वरन तिब्बत भी भारत का अभिन्न अंग होता।”

When NewsMobile fact-checked the post, we found the claim to be fake.
When we put the image through a reverse image search tool, we found an article by Outlook Magazine featuring the same image on the Yandex search engine. The picture credit was attributed to the Associated Press.
We also found another post from Outlook featuring the same image. The caption on this picture read ‘Braced for the worst Nehru is prevented from plunging into a riotous crowd in 1962, before the war’.
When we checked archives of the Associated Press using the keywords ‘ Nehru 1962 fall’, we found the original image. According to the caption, the incident took place in Patna, where a man grabbed the former Prime Minister to keep him from plunging into a riotous crowd at a meeting of the Congress Party.
This proves that the narrative bring shared by the picture on social media is FALSE.
