Tushar Kumar, a 23-year-old Labour Party councillor, has made history by becoming the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the United Kingdom after being officially elected Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood during the council’s annual Mayor Making Ceremony.
Kumar’s political journey began while studying Political Science at King’s College London. He entered local politics at just 20, winning a council seat before later serving as Deputy Mayor in Hertsmere borough. Reports also said he previously worked as a policy adviser with the UK’s Department for Work and Pensions.
Describing the appointment as “an incredible honour”, Kumar thanked residents for their trust and said he aims to stay closely engaged with the community. He has also pledged to encourage stronger youth participation in public service and local governance.
Beyond politics, Kumar has reportedly remained active in cultural and community initiatives, including teaching Hindi to British-Indian children and helping organise celebrations for Diwali, Holi and Independence Day.
During his term, Kumar has selected WD6 Food Support as his official charity, saying support for local organisations and vulnerable residents will remain a key focus.
