A 40-year-old Indian-origin man has been charged in Canada in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a female youth at a park in Surrey, British Columbia, earlier this month.
The Surrey Police Service (SPS) identified the accused as Jagendar Kurana. The British Columbia Prosecution Service has approved two charges against him, sexual assault and sexual interference.
Police said officers responded to a report of a sexual assault at a park in Surrey at around 8:11 p.m. on August 9. The victim told officers that she had allegedly been groped by an adult male, who fled the area.
The victim provided police with a description of the suspect. Officers conducted patrols of the park and surrounding areas but initially could not locate him. Police said the victim did not suffer any physical injuries.
The suspect was initially described as a South Asian man, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing a blue toque, black T-shirt, black pants and black flip-flops.
Four days later, SPS issued a public appeal seeking information about the suspect. Police subsequently identified Kurana and arrested him on August 12.
Kurana was scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday.
The charges are allegations, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
