A tragic incident unfolded in Chicago, USA, where a 22-year-old Indian student, Sai Teja Nukarapu from Khammam, Telangana, was fatally shot during a robbery at a store where he worked part-time. The incident occurred on the evening of September 29, leaving the Indian community in shock and grief.
Sai Teja had recently moved to the United States in June to pursue a master’s degree at Concordia University in Chicago after completing his BBA in Hyderabad. Determined to support himself during his studies, he had taken up a job as a cashier at a local store.
On the evening of the incident, Sai Teja was preparing to end his shift when a colleague asked him to stay back temporarily to allow time for Friday prayers. It was during this period that two armed robbers entered the store and approached the cash counter.
According to preliminary information shared by his friends, Sai Teja handed over the cash without resistance when the robbers demanded it. Despite his cooperation, the assailants fired at him before fleeing the scene. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
The Consulate General of India in Chicago condemned the killing in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “We are shocked and deeply sad at the murder of Indian Student Nukarapu Sai Teja. We demand immediate action against the culprits. Consulate will extend all possible help to the family and friends of the victim.”
