With a global membership of over 40,000, the RCP is one of the UK’s most influential medical professional bodies. Dr Patel, who has been serving as acting president since June 2024, officially takes the reins as its elected leader, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s 500-year history.
Born in Lancashire to Indian immigrant parents, Dr Patel’s career is a testament to decades of dedication to medicine, education, and leadership. After graduating in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1996, she earned her PhD in 2006 and began her clinical career as a consultant nephrologist at Manchester University Hospitals in 2007. She was awarded the Fellowship of the RCP (FRCP) in 2011 and completed an MSc in Medical Education with distinction in 2014.
An accomplished medical educator and administrator, Dr Patel has held a string of influential roles. She was appointed Postgraduate Associate Dean in 2016 and later became the regional lead for the NIHR academic program. Her leadership extended to the University of Liverpool, where she was named Director of Progress and Conduct in 2018.
Between 2016 and 2020, Dr Patel served as Director of the Renal Training Program and Clinical Lead for Quality at the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board (JRCPTB). She also held the role of Global Vice President of the RCP from 2020 to 2023.
Her research contributions, particularly in lupus nephritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, have added depth to the understanding of renal disease. She has also championed medical education, focusing on fairness, differential attainment, and support for doctors in difficulty.
In 2024, Dr Patel was recognised with the Outstanding Leader award at the Global Women in Healthcare Awards, celebrating her commitment to inclusive leadership and mentorship. A skilled PACES examiner and international speaker, she has designed and delivered numerous leadership and assessment programs worldwide.
