ECI Issues Show-Cause Notices To BJP’s Dilip Ghosh, Congress’ Supriya Shrinate

Date:

New Delhi: The Election Commission Of India (ECI) issues show-cause notices to BJP MP Dilip Ghosh and congress leader Supriya Shrinate for their remarks against West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate Kangana Ranaut respectively. The poll panel said that their remarks were undignified and in bad taste.

The Election Commission (EC) has stated that prima facie, the two remarks were a violation of the model code of conduct and its advisory to political parties to maintain dignity during electioneering. The two have been asked to respond to the showcause notices by the evening of March 29.

Dilip Ghosh who is the former West Bengal BJP chief and is contesting from the Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha seat had mocked the family background of Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee in a purported video clip.

The 59-year-old BJP leader said that when Mamata Banerjee goes to Goa she becomes Goa’s daughter, in Tripura she says she is Tripura’s daughter and said that she needs to decide who her father is. The former West Bengal BJP president mocked the TMC’s slogan “Bangla Nijer Meye ke chai meaning Bengal wants its own daughter”.

Conversely, a contentious remark made on social media against Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut—who has been nominated by the BJP to represent the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency in Himachal Pradesh—brought criticism to the Congress’ Supriya Shrinate.

After a backlash, the congresswoman took down her comments from all social media sites, claiming that someone with access to her accounts had posted them instead of her.
