The ICC Men’s Cricket ODI World Cup 2023, held from October 5 to November 19 across 10 Indian cities, provided a remarkable economic boost to the nation. According to a comprehensive report by the ICC, the tournament contributed a staggering $1.39 billion (₹11,637 crore) to the Indian economy.
The tournament, which took place in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Pune, generated significant benefits for various sectors including hospitality, travel, and FMCG.
Tourism Revenue and Spending
The World Cup attracted approximately 1.25 million spectators, generating $861.4 million in tourism revenue. This includes spending on match tickets, local attractions, and other related expenses.
Secondary spending by these visitors, such as dining, shopping, and extended stays, amounted to an additional $515.7 million. International visitors, who stayed in host cities for an average of five nights, contributed $281.2 million to the economy. Domestic tourists, on the other hand, stayed for an average of two nights. Notably, 68% of international attendees expressed their intention to recommend India as a tourist destination, while 59% indicated they were likely to return.
Media Exposure and Employment
Beyond direct financial contributions, the World Cup also provided significant media exposure, valued at $70.7 million. This exposure has helped boost the visibility of Indian businesses and stakeholders on a global scale.
Furthermore, the tournament created over 48,000 full and part-time jobs, primarily in the hospitality sector. This job creation not only supported local economies but also contributed $18 million to the broader economic impact of the event.
