The second Test between India and Bangladesh at Kanpur’s Green Park stadium faced another setback as day two was completely abandoned without a single delivery bowled on Saturday. This puts additional pressure on India, who are striving for a hat-trick appearance in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final scheduled in the UK.
If India fails to secure a win in this match, their road to the WTC final could become significantly more challenging. The team would need to achieve convincing victories in their upcoming home Test series against New Zealand, starting October 16, and a five-Test series against Australia, beginning November 22, to bolster their standing.
Currently, India tops the WTC standings with seven wins, two losses, and one draw from ten matches. The first day of the Test was also marred by rain, allowing only 35 overs of play, during which Bangladesh managed to score 107 runs for the loss of three wickets. Mominul Haque remained not out on 40, while wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim was at the crease with 6 runs.
Pacer Akash Deep was the standout performer for India on the first day, taking two quick wickets to dismiss Zakir Hasan for a duck and Shadman Islam for 24. This early breakthrough reduced Bangladesh to 29 for 2. After a partnership of 51 runs between captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and Haque, Shanto was dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin for 31 runs off 57 balls, hitting six boundaries.
In the series opener, India had dominated, winning by 280 runs after setting a daunting target of 515 for Bangladesh. Key performances came from Ashwin, who scored 113 and took 6 wickets for 88 runs, along with Shubman Gill (119 not out) and Rishabh Pant (109). Jasprit Bumrah also made significant contributions with the ball, taking 4 for 50 and 1 for 24 in the match.
Team India Playing 11: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(w), KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj
