Mbappe Set to Lead France in World Cup Semi-final After Injury Concern

Date:

France captain Kylian Mbappe is expected to lead Les Bleus in their FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final against Spain after head coach Didier Deschamps confirmed the striker has recovered from a minor ankle injury sustained during the quarter-final victory over Morocco.

Mbappe had raised concerns after being substituted late in France’s 2-0 win over Morocco and did not complete the team’s final training session. However, Deschamps said the decision to reduce his workload was purely precautionary.

“Kylian is fine,” Deschamps told reporters, according to Reuters.

The France coach added that the 27-year-old had trained with the squad, albeit on a modified programme.

“Yes, he trained. He is allowed to do 10 minutes in one drill instead of 15,” Deschamps said.

Mbappe’s availability comes as a major boost for France ahead of their blockbuster semi-final against Spain, who progressed after defeating Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-finals and arrive on a 36-match unbeaten run.

The winners of the clash will secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on July 19.

France have enjoyed an impressive knockout campaign, finishing top of Group I before defeating Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32, edging Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16 and overcoming Morocco 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

Les Bleus have scored six goals in the knockout rounds without conceding, with Mbappe continuing to spearhead the attack as France bid to lift their third FIFA World Cup title.
