Cristiano Ronaldo will have to wait longer for his first Saudi Pro League title after Al Nassr were held to a dramatic 1-1 draw by arch-rivals Al-Hilal on Tuesday night.
Al Nassr appeared set to secure the league title early after defender Mohamed Simakan gave them the lead in the 37th minute. The Riyadh club maintained control for most of the contest and were moments away from celebrating a crucial victory in the top-of-the-table clash
However, heartbreak arrived deep into stoppage time when goalkeeper Bento accidentally turned the ball into his own net in the eighth minute of added time, allowing Al-Hilal to snatch a late equaliser and delay Al Nassr’s title celebrations.
Despite the draw, Al Nassr remain at the top of the standings with 83 points after 33 matches, still holding a five-point advantage over Al-Hilal heading into the final stages of the season.
Following the match, Ronaldo thanked supporters for their backing and remained optimistic about finally lifting the league trophy.
“The dream is close. Heads up, we have one more step to take! Thank you all for the amazing support tonight!” Ronaldo posted on social media after the game
Al Nassr will now turn their attention to their final league fixture against Damac FC next Thursday, while Al-Hilal face NEOM SC on Saturday.
Before that, Ronaldo and Al Nassr will also compete in the AFC Champions League Two final against Gamba Osaka in Riyadh on May 16.
